Orphaned Account Removal

Orphaned accounts are one of the most common—and most dangerous—identity risks in modern IT environments.

They arise when user accounts continue to exist in applications or siloed directories even though the corresponding identity no longer exists in the organization’s identity store of record. Employee terminations, contractor offboarding, M&A activity, shadow IT, and decentralized application ownership all contribute to this growing problem. Over time, these unmanaged accounts blend into the background, escaping detection while maintaining access to systems they should never touch.

Orphaned accounts are indefensible.

They violate least privilege, undermine access reviews, and represent a clear breakdown in identity lifecycle management. Regulators and auditors don’t ask how orphaned accounts were created—they ask why they still exist. Identifying and removing them is not just good security practice; it’s an essential control for proving that access is intentional, accountable, and aligned with business need.

Orphaned Account Damage – Real World Example

In early 2025, TD Bank disclosed that attackers exploited a former employee’s still-active account to access and steal sensitive customer information — including names, birthdates, account numbers, and transaction histories. Because the account was not properly deprovisioned after the employee left, it effectively served as an orphaned account, enabling unauthorized access over several months and contributing to a class-action lawsuit and reputational damage.

the incident has sparked class-action litigation seeking compensatory damages, and plaintiffs in related suits have indicated demands totaling at least $5 million, highlighting the financial exposure such governance failures can create.

YouAttest Solution:   Automated Mapping and Reports

We often see companies with multiple data sources that are disconnected from their sync repositories of identity data status. These separated applications are a security and governance concern because of issues like the creation of “orphaned accounts” – accounts that no longer exist in the enterprise but linger in these siloed resources.

YouAttest has automated a method to discover and eliminate thes accounts.

Step #1:

Select “Siloed Resource” or “HR/IAM Resource Variance” from the YouAttest console.

Either mechanism w/ allow the enterprise to determine a variance in the siloed resource.  The Siloed Resource works off your IAM, the HR/IAM Resource Variance works offs your HR system.

Step 1:  Select what you want to use as your ISoR (Identity Store of Record)

Input the information into YouAttest that you consider you Identity Store of Record (ISoR).

Step #2a:  Select Action for Comparison  (IAM systems as ISoR)

In the Siloed Access Report workflow, select “Source Identity Mapping” to discover the orphaned accounts.

NOTE: One can also discover out-of-sync group information as well.

Step #2A:  For Siloed Resources, process w/ the “Source Identity Matching to discover the orphaned accounts.

Step #2b:  Select Action for Comparison  (HR systems as ISoR)

In the Siloed Access Report workflow, select “HR-IAM Variance Access Report” to discover the orphaned accounts in the IAM system.

Step 2b:  Select these settings in HR/IAM variance to eliminate orphaned accounts in your IAM.

Step #3A:  Review the report to identify the Orphaned accounts in Siloed Resources

The YouAttest GUI wals through the GRC admin to conduct the comparison and generates a report that will identify all the “orphaned” accounts in the siloed systems.

Step 3a:   YouAttest will automatically identify orphaned accounts in the siloed systems.

Step #3B:  Review the Report to Identify the Orphaned accounts in your IAM systems

The HR/IAM variance report will generate a report w/ the identities that are “orphaned” in the IAM system.

Step 3b:   YouAttest is able to compare enterprise HR systems to IAM systems to find orphan accounts.

Orphaned accounts are not theoretical—they are a proven and recurring cause of real-world cyber, financial, and reputational damage. In early 2025, TD Bank disclosed that attackers exploited a former employee’s still-active account to access sensitive customer data, triggering litigation and public scrutiny. Incidents like this reinforce a hard truth: when identities are not properly governed throughout their lifecycle, orphaned accounts become legitimate entry points for attackers.

The more important question for most organizations is not whether orphaned accounts exist, but how many are in your enterprise—10, 50, 100, 500, or 5,000? As enterprises expand through cloud adoption, M&A activity, contractors, and decentralized application ownership, identity data fragments across systems. Over time, accounts persist in siloed directories long after the identities behind them are gone, quietly accumulating risk that is rarely visible through manual reviews or point-in-time audits.

YouAttest eliminates this blind spot by automating the discovery of orphaned accounts across all systems—including IAM platforms, HR systems, and siloed applications. By establishing a clear Identity Store of Record (ISoR) and continuously comparing it against access data wherever it exists, YouAttest makes orphaned accounts visible, reportable, and defensible. The result is not just stronger security, but demonstrable governance: access that is intentional, accountable, and aligned with business need.
